Tales of "Ancient Ales"-- Dogfish Head Brewery

Dogfish Head Brewery is known for its experimental and "extreme" beers. A rather new brewing company, only 15 years old, was founded by owner, Sam Calagione.

In the late 90's, Dogfish Head began brewing an "Ancient Ales" series. The recipes for these brews were based on a chemical analysis of residue found on various drinking vessels from several different archeological sites.

This like of beers, has led to "BREWED," a new series premiering, November 21st, on the Discovery Channel. Sam, with archeologist and beer expert, Pat McGovern will travel the world to recreate more ancient ales.

They visit Rome to research Italian beers and New Zealand to investigate making the "first tomato based beer."

This year's festival will feature:

Midas Touch- (from the Ancient Ales series) This recipe is the actual oldest-known fermented beverage in the world! It is an ancient Turkish recipe using the original ingredients from the 2700 year old drinking vessels discovered in the tomb of King Midas.

Indian Brown Ale-  a cross between a Scotch Ale, an India Pale Ale, and an American Brown.

Palo Santa Marron- An unfiltered, unfettered, unprecedented brown ale aged in handmade wooden brewing vessels. The caramel and vanilla complexity unique to this beer comes from the exotic Paraguayan Palo Santo wood from which these tanks were crafted.

Festina Peche- A refreshing neo-BerlinerWeisse fermented with honest-to-goodness peaches! This beer is seasonal and is only released in summer months.
